The one where Scruff refuses to eat from a bowl

Writer: Jo DraperJo Draper

Ignore the banging in the background - I was doing the dishes!!

There's something you need to know about Scruff.

He's adorable. He's cheeky. He's not particularly food-driven.

Sure, he loves his special treats, which shall not be named because he's sitting next to me and will get too excited. But dinner? That's a different story.

Paul makes Scruff's dinner every evening. It's dehydrated food mixed with water (we use Frontier Pets, an awesome business), and it's a perfectly good meal.

Scruff's reaction?

🐾 Walks over.

🐾 Gives Paul his paw like the polite little gentleman he is.

🐾 Then completely ignores his food.

No interest.

Not hungry.

He's too posh to eat from a bowl (you would think so anyway!).

Until Paul scoops the same food into a plastic bag.

Suddenly, Scruff is ALL IN.

He paws at the bag.

He holds it down with his little paws and eats every last bit.

Same food. Different packaging.

Honestly? Business works the same way.

Why presentation and branding matter

You could have the best service in the world, but it won’t attract the right people if it's not packaged right.

Think about this.

Why do some people buy a $7 latte from a trendy café but won’t pay $2 for the same coffee at a local diner?

Why do brands like Apple, Disney, and Chanel charge premium prices when similar products exist for cheaper?

Why do people pay for beautifully branded planners when they could just use a free notebook?

Because branding is everything.

➡It’s not just what you offer - it’s how you present it.

➡It’s how your brand makes people feel.

➡It’s the difference between “another service” and something people genuinely want.

Scruff didn’t suddenly love his dinner because the food changed.

He loved it because the experience changed.

How to apply this to your business

Make your offer feel irresistible.

Look at how you’re presenting your services. Do they sound exciting? Do they feel like something people need? If your DREAM clients aren’t engaging, it’s not about adding more - it’s about packaging it in a way that clicks for them.

Lean into the psychology of branding.

People don’t only buy products or services - they buy stories, emotions, and transformations. If you’re a VA, you’re not only “helping with admin” - you’re giving business owners their time and sanity back. See the difference?

Look at how YOU engage with brands.

Next time you buy something, ask yourself: Why did I choose this one? Whether it’s the branding, the experience, or the way it was marketed, chances are - it wasn’t only about the product.

The Magic of branding done right

This is why branding isn’t only about a logo.

It’s about how people feel when they see, hear, and engage with your business.

That’s why, inside VA Magic Mirror, I help you create a brand that attracts your dream clients.

Because let’s be honest - you don’t want to be the business equivalent of a boring food bowl that gets ignored.

You want to be the one that makes people go, “OMG, I need this NOW.”
