Money mindset MAGIC: shifting from scarcity to abundance

Writer: Jo DraperJo Draper

Your brain is lying to you about money

Money isn't the villain of your business story. It's not lurking in a dark alley, twirling its moustache and plotting ways to ruin your life. Your beliefs about money, though?

They might be the sneaky little tricksters keeping you stuck - like tiny financial gremlins whispering nonsense in your ear.

Ever caught yourself thinking:

  • "Money is hard to make."

(As if it's a rare species that only appears once every seven years, like financial Bigfoot.)

  • "I shouldn't charge too much."

(Obviously, the goal is to work for free and live off good vibes and sunlight, right?)

  • "Wanting wealth makes me greedy."

(The second you earn more than you need, you'll start cackling on a throne made of gold coins like a cartoon villain.)

These thoughts didn't simply materialise one day while you were minding your own business.

They were handed to you - by well-meaning parents, society, and that delightful little cocktail of generational money trauma and passed down like an unwanted heirloom, as that weird ceramic cat your aunt gave you that you can't throw away but can't stand looking at.

Because you learned to fear money doesn't mean you have to keep fearing it. Money isn't out to get you. It's not judging your life choices. It's not even that complicated - it's simply energy or a tool, a way to exchange value.

Let's stop treating money like a fickle Magician pulling a vanishing act every time you check your bank account.

It's time to shift from scarcity to abundance.

Let's make it flow - on purpose, with confidence, and maybe even a little swagger. Because you, my friend, are not meant to scrape by.

Where did your money mindset come from?

Paul and I used the envelope system for years to manage our money. Every payday, we withdrew cash and divided it into different envelopes: rent, food, electricity, internet, birthdays/Christmas, and even a holiday fund. Whatever was left over, we spent on fun stuff. The system gave us control, clarity, and freedom.

Even today, we still do this, but in a modern way: We have separate accounts for household bills, holidays, spending money, rainy-day savings, cars, and medical expenses.

But it wasn't always this way.

My first husband controlled not only the money but everything, including me. When I finally left, I didn't only walk away from the relationship; I walked straight into a mountain of debt he'd racked up in my name. That's when I realised how people use financial control to keep others small.

But here's what I also learned: reclaiming your financial power isn't only about paying off debt or making more money. It's about freedom, making choices on your terms, and one of the most empowering things you'll ever do.

If you've ever felt like money isn't yours to control or wealth is out of reach, know this: you can rewrite your story.

This is not only a possibility; it's your power. You have the ability to shape your financial narrative, turn the page and write a new, empowering chapter.

Most of us never got a Money 101 class in school. Instead, we picked up beliefs about money from:

  • Parents who struggled and told us to "be careful" with it.

  • TV shows that made rich people look evil (seriously, why is every wealthy character in a movie a villain?).

  • A business culture that glorifies the "starving artist" but celebrates CEOs for making billions.

If you've ever felt guilty for wanting more, this is why.

But what if wealth didn't have to feel wrong? What if abundance wasn't about greed but about possibility?

Rewriting the money story

You didn't choose your money beliefs - others passed them down to you like outdated hand-me-downs. But you don't have to keep wearing them because they landed in your wardrobe.

It's time for a wardrobe upgrade. Let's flip the script:

Instead of: "Making money is hard."

Try: "Making money is about alignment and value."

People who pay for artisanal water in glass bottles will pay for your expertise.

Instead of: "I shouldn't charge too much."

Try this: "People love to pay for quality and transformation."

Have you ever noticed how people happily spend $7 on a fancy coffee but hesitate to invest in themselves? Don't be that person.

Instead of: "Wanting more is selfish."

Try: "Wealth lets me create more impact and opportunities."

More money means more ways to help people and, maybe, upgrading that dodgy laptop from 2013.

Success isn't about hoarding cash - it's about flow. Money is a resource, and resources should flow, not sit untouched in a 'rainy day' fund that never sees the light of day.

Shifting from scarcity to abundance

The scarcity mindset says: "There's never enough."

The abundance mindset says: "I create opportunities."

How do you make the shift? By proving to your brain that abundance isn't a unicorn - it's real and already in motion. Try this:

  • Raise your rates. Your skills have grown, your expertise has deepened, and your clients receive incredible value. Price accordingly.

  • Spend without guilt. Investing in yourself or your business isn't "wasting money." Whether you're hiring help, upgrading your tools, or treating yourself to a life upgrade, trust that spending strategically fuels growth.

  • Track your wins and celebrate everything. Have you landed a client? Found $20 in an old jacket? Have you scored a free coffee? These are all signs that money flows, and noticing them rewires your brain to expect more.

Celebrate these wins, no matter how small they may seem. They are the stepping stones to your financial abundance.

Money likes confidence. The more you trust it, the more it trusts you. Stop treating it like a bad boyfriend who might ghost you at any moment.

Your business and abundance

An abundant business isn't about high revenue. It's about freedom, which lets you breathe, create, and enjoy what you've built.

  • Can you take a day off without stressing? That's abundance. If your business falls apart because you dared to rest, it's not a business - it's a hamster wheel.

  • Do you have clients who respect your rates? That's abundance. There is no more "can you do this for exposure" nonsense. Exposure doesn't pay bills.

  • Are you making decisions from trust instead of fear? That's abundance. Investing in your business with excitement instead of panic? That's a whole new level of success.

Abundance isn't about making more money - it's about running your business in a way that feels good and supports you rather than drains you.
